Life's a beach in Newbury as Beach Festival returns ...

29-2312O Beach RugbyTHOUSANDS are expected to flock to the ?beach? at ?Newbury-on sea,? when the three-day beach festival kicks off at Newbury Rugby Football Club on Friday (Jul 12) evening, along with live music from top bands.

Last year (2012), some sun, no sea and lots of sand ? 1000 tonnes ? turned the Monks Lane site into a suitable venue for a beach party, after some 2.500 visitors turned up, lured by the promise of golden sands, some 50 miles from the coast.

With at least 1,000 visitors already booked on Tuesday (Jul 9) for this year?s (2013) festival, organisers say they have booked good weather, along with live-music from some 30 bands, including Small Town Saviours, South Finesse, Military Arcade, Midnight Rambler and Blues Brothers, from tomorrow evening (Fri) on the main stage.

Woolton Hill teenager, Emma Lawrence, aged 16, who sings and plays her own compositions on guitar, takes to the stage at 6.15pm on Friday and will also be playing in the bar.

Sunday sees the rugby club juniors ? 32 teams ? playing beach rugby and competing for the King of the Beach title, alongside games, challenges and sports.

A battery of food and drinks includes dishes from Europe, the USA, Africa, Asia, South America and the UK, washed down with beach cocktails, 50 guest ales, 20 wines, a Pimms stall, champagne and Prosecco, Sake and Jack Daniels.

All weekend camping is available on flat pitches, with weary festival goers to be revived by a full English (breakfast), from 7am.

Proceeds of this year?s festival will support the club, a non profit-making organisation: ?We have 400 junior players and the money raised will support them through the rugby season,? said Simon Ward, a club spokesman.

Last year?s festival raised money for the Matt Hampson Foundation, which supports those seriously injured, or disabled, particularly due to participation in sport, physical education, or recreation.
