Convoy of Libyan, Tuareg troops cross into Niger (AP)

NIAMEY, Niger ? The owner of a private newspaper says he saw a convoy of Libyan soldiers accompanied by Tuareg tribal fighters arrive in the town of Agadez in northern Niger.

Abdoulaye Harouna, the owner of the Agadez Info newspaper, said by telephone that the convoy which arrived late Monday night consisted of several dozen pickup trucks.

He says at the head of the convoy was Tuareg rebel leader Rissa ag Boula, a native of Niger and a former minister of tourism. A decade ago, Boula led a war of independence on behalf of Niger's ethnic Tuareg nomads, before seeking refuge in Libya.

Harouna says the pro-Moammar Gadhafi troops accompanying Boula were well-armed. He says the convoy was coming from the direction of Arlit where the desert border abuts both Libya and Algeria.
