CORRECTED-UPDATE 1-EU seeks legal opinion on global ...

Wed Feb 22, 2012 1:38pm EST

(Clarifies ACTA role in 6th paragraph)

By Claire Davenport

BRUSSELS Feb 22 (Reuters) ? The European Union?s
executive said on Wednesday it would refer a disputed global
agreement to tackle online piracy to the bloc?s highest court to
check whether it complies with EU fundamental rights.

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, which also aims to
cut trademark theft, sparked protests across Europe this month
over fears of online censorship and increased surveillance.

EU members Germany, Slovakia, Estonia, Cyprus and the
Netherlands have refused to sign the agreement on the grounds
that it endangered freedom of speech and privacy. Poland,
Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Latvia have expressed concerns
about the agreement?s impact.

?This morning, my fellow commissioners have discussed and
agreed in general with my proposal to refer the ACTA agreement
to the European Court of Justice,? EU trade chief Karel De Gucht
said.

?We are planning to ask Europe?s highest court to assess
ACTA?s compatibility with the EU?s fundamental rights and
freedoms, such as freedom of expression and information or that
of protection,? he told a regular news briefing.

Among other measures, ACTA asks Internet providers to
cooperate with national authorities to crackdown on online
piracy.

Since talks on ACTA began in Geneva in June 2008, Internet
lobbies and health campaigners have rallied against it, saying
that overly strict controls of copyright would exclude people
from the Internet and prevent developing countries from
accessing generic medicines.

The European Commission on Wednesday stood by its decision
to ratify ACTA, but said the plethora of complaints against the
agreement prompted its decision to refer it to the European
court.

?Intellectual property is Europe?s main raw material, but
the problem is that we currently struggle to protect it outside
the European Union. This hurts our companies, destroys jobs and
harms our economies,? De Gucht said. ?ACTA will not censor
websites or shut them down.?

Self Esteem | Improving self confidence for public speakers

Public speaking has always been a way to inspire others and push others up to feel good about themselves. Most people who are into public speaking are doing it for all kinds of reasons like for seminars, business meetings, teaching, and all sorts of things. However, no matter what kind of public speaking that it may be, it?s still quite a tough task to accomplish if you don?t have the right confidence. For some, they want to pursue a career in public speaking, but they just don?t have the confidence to speak out exactly what it is that they want for their audience to know. Improving self confidence for public speakers may take some time, but the possibilities are endless when you think about all the different ways to improve your confidence.

Speak with friends and family

If you have yet to develop confidence at all for speaking in public, try asking your closest friends and family to judge and criticize you by doing a sample speaking session. Let them know that this is just for a practice, and as a way to help you learn how to cope with speaking in public. This technique is extremely helpful, as you can develop your confidence little by little when you seek their help. Try getting only one or two people first that you feel very confident about, and then when you?re ready, try speaking to as many close friends as possible.

Take public speaking classes

In order to feel confident in yourself, you need a good amount of education and knowledge to help you go out there with the confidence to do your best. You?ll have more confidence because you know that you were taught how to go out there and do good. Speaking classes will teach you several techniques to help get you the courage and the confidence to do it at the best of your ability.

Have more self belief

This tip may seem extremely useless or talked about so many times, but if you simply believe in yourself, and that you know you?re going to do good, it can help increase your chances at doing good. Every chance you get at thinking negatively only increases those chances happening. By believing in yourself and removing all negative thoughts, you?ll find yourself to go out there feeling more confident and relaxed to speak. Your own self belief makes a huge difference, so take advantage of what you feel inside.

Visualize the best speech you can give

This is another tip that may seem so common, but it helps to constantly visualize success. Visualization helps keep you elevated and gives you good vibes to keep you in the right mood. The right mindset can help keep your mind in the right spot for success when speaking in person. Remember, your mind can play a huge factor to your success when you speak publicly, so try your best to really try and visualize as much as possible before any time you?re about to speak in public.

Humor and humility goes a long way

If ever you feel nervous and you lack the confidence to give a good speech, don?t be afraid to humiliate yourself and crack some jokes. People love it when you combine everything, including your important message, along with some humor and humility involved. Humor doesn?t need to be perfect, and as long as you aren?t hurting anybody, then you shouldn?t have any problems.

What?s the worst that can happen?

If you think about it, what?s the worst that can happen? You may trip, fall over, say a ?bad word?. Okay! Just kidding! You just need to know that your audience wants you to succeed. Have you ever watched somebody speak in public and hope for them to mess up? No, and it?s simply because you?re a good person and you?re supporting the person up there, so it?s the same way that it works for you. Nobody wants for you to mess up, and even if you do, everybody will still end up cheering for you as long as you continue on with your performance.

Public speaking doesn?t need to be such a tough task. With these simple tips on improving self confidence for public speakers, you?ll soon discover the power you have at achieving the confidence you need for speaking in public.

What You Say And How You Say It | Exceed ... - Self Motivation Tips.

How you say it

There are times when we say something about a phrase that comes out to be a different meaning. Just about everyone heard of the concept of self talk?you simply have a conversation to yourself, as funny as that sounds. But behind this self talk among us lies a very powerful tool. Ever notice yourself getting hungry when you look at McDonald?s? The reason behind this is because the color red and yellow is known to inflict your hunger instinct. As genius as McDonald?s is for taking advantage of this color psychology, it all goes back to our subconscious mind determining our actions.

If you want to take advantage of your own self-talk, it does exactly what McDonald?s can do to your mind, and that?s making you hungry for its burgers.

There are only three requirements that you must follow in order to take advantage of self-talk. But before these requirements are given, remember what I told you about this concept.

It is a powerful tool that lies among us.

For this reason alone, the purpose of self-talk is to keep you on track, make you become a better person and anything that will go towards being an overall better self. It will get you on track with your goals and turn your life around, only if you are serious enough with it. With this in mind, here are the three basic yet powerful tactics of self-talk: Positive, Present Tense, and Being Specific.

Not many realize this but when you place positivity in your mind, it spreads throughout your mood, energy, and action. This is one reason to make positive talk very important. But, it alone will not be enough to have any effect on the mind and spirit of your body. You need to incorporate the present tense and specificity of it.

how you contol your subconscious

Have you ever done something and afterwards, you ask yourself why you did it? Not only is that an example of self-talk, the process of you doing it without you consciously knowing states the fact that your mind is constantly receiving messages. By enforcing your mind to make present tense (and making sure that it is positive and specific) of an action, you force your subconscious mind to find a way to it.

Instead of saying you ?should be?, tell yourself you ?are?. Don?t tell yourself you ?will? either. Be specific about it. If you are eating a donut when you are not supposed to, say to yourself that you have stopped, not you are going to stop or that you will stop. Doing so otherwise, you acknowledge your subconscious mind that you ?are? still eating that donut.

By sending a message that states the present tense that you have stopped, your subconscious mind will go out of its way to make you stop eating the donut. The way how you say this specifically is very important, keep that in mind.

Become aware of what you tell your mind and state that it needs to be done now. There are always those messengers that do not make it through to deliver the word. To ensure that no words get lost, you need to direct the messages repeatedly. Be that proverbial broken record that can?t be paused. ?Say it enough to where your subconscious mind gets tired of hearing it because this is the key to manipulating your subconscious thoughts indirectly. Do it enough time with positivity, present tense, and specificity and you hold a powerful tool that lies among yourself.

Any thought that is passed on to the subconscious often enough and convincingly enough is finally accepted.

Blind faith across the generations

I can't really pinpoint when my dad first started bringing home the powdery mixture, as white as sugar and as fine as beach sand.

He'd step into the kitchen and sprinkle it ? three grams at a time ? into some orange juice and stir to the point it crested the edge of the glass. He'd serve it with breakfast. One glass for each of us. Drink up.

Had I been older, I might have protested. But I was just a kid, living in an era when the only things you were supposed to avoid eating were paper and dirt. Everything else was a go. So I tended to accept whatever came my way at the dinner table.

"This," my dad would tell us, "will keep you from ever getting a cold."

And so it went for years, the breakfast orange juice nothing more than a mere vehicle for delivering a massive shot of vitamin C.

My father was an early disciple of Dr. Linus Pauling, who was one of his Caltech colleagues. Pauling was a chemist; my dad a physicist. I don't know that their paths crossed regularly, but it is a small campus and a place where big ideas and extreme theories are discussed freely.

Pauling was convinced that vitamin C, taken in mega doses, would prevent the common cold. And for my dad, usually not one to go on blind faith, that was all the proof he needed.

I somehow imagined that this guy Pauling worked amid a battlefield of test tubes and beakers in some dank basement laboratory, cooking up this miracle drug and that folks like my dad would swoop by every so often to check out the progress and pick up a batch.

Pauling was already a deeply respected and widely known man of science, but vitamin C made him a bit of a rock star. He gave rise to a generation that embraced vitamin C as a mighty shield that would deflect a good many of the bad things in life, the common cold being at the top of the list.

When he wrote a book titled "Vitamin C and the Common Cold," my dad brought it home immediately.

If you read one book this year, he said, thumping the orange-colored jacket of the book, make it this one.

I took a pass. Same with "Vitamin C, the Common Cold and the Flu" and "Cancer and Vitamin C," as exhilarating as the titles sounded.

When I went off to college, my parents packed me up a supply of vitamin C to get me through the first half of my freshman year. I'm fairly certainly that, while I may have let a lot of things slide in college, I would have dutifully taken it. If just out of habit.

By then vitamin C was as universal as breakfast cereal, no more special than the fish oil, vitamin E and calcium tablets that served as its bunkmates on the shelves at Costco. So many ways to be healthy.

But there was a dark side to vitamin C, and I guess I didn't even realize it at the time.

Though Pauling won the Noble Prize twice ? once for chemistry, once for peace ? his Vitamin C campaign was branded as bad science by some. Clinical trials conducted by the Mayo Clinic concluded that vitamin C was no more effective in fighting cancer than the placebos used in the testing. Claims that the vitamin successfully fought colds were brushed off as "quackery."

Pauling dismissed the findings. But after that, suspicions never seemed to rest. Like fluoride and global warming, vitamin C ? hoax or cure-all ? is debated still in the far margins of the Internet.

"Vitamin C may enhance radiation therapy for aggressive brain tumors." That's the headline on a story posted on medicalxpress.com last week. "Straight to the veins: Vitamin C shot to fight work fatigue." That rather scary thought appeared in an article published last week in the Times of India. "Can Vitamin C become Deadly?" Yet another uplifting read, this one from the Pakistan News Service.

The Noble Prize website devoted to Pauling doesn't even mention vitamin C, and when a postage stamp commemorating Pauling was made public, it featured red blood cells for his groundbreaking work on sickle-cell anemia ? not a single vitamin C tablet in sight.

How I Taught my Family to Love ? MomLife Today

It has been ten years since the day I taught my family how to love ? and they never forgot it. You see I was weeks from delivering my third child and my belly was a big as a barn. It was becoming more and more difficult to pick up around the house, especially going up and down those blasted stairs. Each sock on the floor, felt like a slap across my face in addition to a stab in my back as I bent over to pick it up. Do they not love me? Do they not realize how much pain they are causing me? My rhetorical thoughts were met with an answer in my heart. No, they don?t know how much pain they are causing you. How could they? They have never carried around 20% of their body weight in their belly before.

An idea dawned on me? a simply delicious idea! I went to our hall closet and pulled out three backpacks: papa bear size, medium bear size, and baby bear size. I quickly calculated 20% of my husband?s 200 lb body weight was forty pounds. Then I did the math on my daughter and son. With a smirk on my face and a twinkle in my eye I retrieved some bricks and books. After I loaded them in backpacks, I headed to the bathroom scale. I weighed each backpack carefully adjusting the weight to reflect their 20% load.

Sitting on the couch with three weighted backpacks at my feet, I waited for my family to return home.

?How was your day hun?? ?What?s for dinner Mommy?? ?Can I have a friend over?? Their voices spilled into the living room as I heard a brief case, books, a sweatshirt, workout bag, lunch kit, and mail drop.

?Come into the living room. I have a game for us to play,? I said in my sweetest tempting voice. Pointing to the three backpacks I explained that I wanted each to put one on in front and I would secure it by tying the straps together in the back so that it wouldn?t fall out. ?You can each get to know how Mother feels.? They agreed.

Standing in front of me giggling at each other I snapped their photo. Then I told them the game begins with them cleaning the house, starting with the things they have dropped in the entry way. As they headed out of sight I added, ?Then get the Cheerios under the kitchen table, the socks on the stairs, the crayons in the playroom? and on and on I detailed their clean up list.?

It wasn?t ten minutes until I heard ?Mommy this isn?t a fun game.? And from hubby, ?this is really killing my back.? Did I let them off the hook: no way! The rest of the night I made them clean the house (folding clothes and unloading the dishwasher), taking stuff in and out of the car (through the bucket back seat), and picking up a spilled jigsaw puzzle.

Miserable, each one was totally miserable when I called them in for dinner. I explained that the backpacks could come off after dinner. I watched as each sat uncomfortably in the chair, trying to cram their bellies under the table. Red faced and moaning, they listened as I explained love? love that is an action not a feeling, love that always begins with identification. If you want to love someone, you must begin by identifying with them so you truly know how they feel. Then you will know how to act toward them. ?How can each of you love me?? I asked.

The ideas flowed: ?I can pick up my Thomas Trains and put them on the train table.? ?I can pull the car out of the garage so you can get in easier.? ?I can pick up my clothes and put them away.?

That day birthed a practice in our home. If we see someone that needs love, we start with trying to identify with them. This new year we started without electricity for thirty-six hours, freezing in our house, wearing coats, hats, and mittens identifying with the homeless, to see how God would lead us to love them. Once we took turns eating alone, isolated from the rest of the family so as to identify with an elderly relative who was all alone.

What are your thoughts on teaching love?
