Jim McGilvary Network Marketing Mastery | Beneficial Home Base ...

Many people are discovering that they can earn financial success by working at home. This is true, but many people have no clue how to start their business. Remember, if you want your business to succeed, you need to learn everything there is to know about operating a successful home business. The information in this article is the first step toward your learning.

Consider starting a membership with an online forum to get great ideas and advice for your home business. There is good information available on the internet, and a quick search will result in a number of good sites. There also a variety of blogs that you can consult for more advice.

Settle on a price for your products. Find out the cost of making your own products. A standard pricing suggestion to follow is taking the cost of the materials and multiply that by two. That is the equivalent of the wholesale price you would charge others. Get the retail price by multiplying the cost three times.

TIP! You need to ensure your website will get you sales. Many small, home-based businesses limit themselves by ignoring the opportunities of the Internet.

Make an effort to reach out to your customers face-to-face. Naturally, you want to market online because you can reach so many people that way. However, you do not want to overlook all the business you can find offline, too. Have a booth set up at community events or organize a sale in a certain area.

Manage your communications with your home based business customers to find the right balance between sharing pertinent information as necessary and sending too many messages. There are various options for reaching your customers as new developments occur with your site. Consider newsletters or opt-in email alerts. Don?t overload them, however, with too many email updates and communications.

When starting a home-based business it is of the utmost importance that you have the support of your family and loved ones. When you own your own home business, it can sometimes be difficult and stressful. Unless you receive support from your family members, even just providing you with the time you need to do your work, it will not be possible for you to be successful in running a home business.

TIP! You should have a different checking account for your home business. This allows you to maintain separate accounts for both your business and your personal finances.

Have a regular work schedule. Pencil in the times when you will actually be working in order to avoid getting burned out. It may be a must to work for a long time sometimes, but do not over do it. Try not to be thinking about work when you?re with your family in order to mitigate stress.

Advertise your home business on the internet. With a website your customers can browse with ease, whether designed by you or a professional, you will be more successful. Make the content on your site useful. Give your customers the ability to purchase products from you online and to remain in touch with you. Find out more about how to create a successful website for your business.

Create a short business objective. The main idea is that you want to establish your company?s goals and purpose for existing. In these sentences, you should describe the exceptional qualities of your business and you hope to accomplish.

TIP! All home-based businesses should have a clear objective. It should be a short description of the goals for your business and should describe your business in just a few sentences.

Take the time to select a good name. Choose a brand name that will help your customer recognize and remember your products. The name you choose could have a unique story behind it. By doing this, your brand will become familiar and customers will be loyal to your product.

A flash drive is a great way to back up valuable business information. This could save you thousands in expenses and preserve your reputation as a business. You can also use online storage solutions as backups.

Now that you have a greater idea of what you need to do to create and manage a home business, you should start feeling like you can accomplish your home business goals. Remember that the information you learned is only going to work if you apply it. If you follow the tips in this article, then your home business should succeed

TIP! While conducting business in your sleepwear can seem enjoyable at first, you may begin to miss the interaction that you had with coworkers and clients everyday at your previous job. Try to get out of the house during the week to personally stay in touch with others.

Losing One of Our Own | - The Colon Club

July 17th, 2012, we lost one of the great ones. We lost one of our own. We lost Pat Steer, aka ?Gaelen?.

I first joined The Colon Club in February 2008, Pat joined a few months later in June 2008. I got in the habit of reading her posts whether the topic applied to me or not because I knew whatever she had to say, it would be interesting, intelligent and okay, sometimes a bit controversial. Early on I spoke up in her defense on one thing or another when she was being attacked on the board. She sent me a PM informing me that although she appreciated the thought, she was a big girl and was more than capable of defending herself. Al-righty then.

That didn?t deter me. I always was and always will be a fan of Gaelen?s. At one point I inquired about starting my own blog and she sent me all sorts of helpful links and advice on what to do and not do. So far I?ve done nothing, but I?ve saved the information because I know if and when I do decide to jump into the world of blogging, that Pat has given me the road map I?ll need to do it.

Most people here either loved her or hated her. Some thought that The Colon Club favored Pat and allowed her special privileges. I don?t know why they would, as Pat was just as quick to criticize The Colon Club as to how they should run and moderate their web-site (and didn?t) as she would anyone.

To me, Pat?s criticism and advice were given out of a true passion and desire to help others. She was desperate to make the world right. It was as though it had been such a struggle and a journey for her to understand how things worked, that her mission in life was to clear the path for others so that they wouldn?t have to waste their precious time in recreating the wheel. It baffled her and frustrated her to no end when others couldn?t see the world as clearly as she saw it through her own eyes. I imagined her throwing her arms up in the air, rolling her eyes and banging out a flaming post on her keyboard to anyone who didn?t get the point she was trying to make.

When my recurrence was confirmed just before Christmas 2010, Pat was there to help me through it. She helped me get my head around my situation and plot my strategy. She was my compass. I looked to Pat for guidance, inspiration and support. And she never disappointed me. Meeting her at Call on Congress in March of 2012 was a pleasure and an honor. She was exactly the person I had envisioned her to be, just a little louder. During the event she was awarded the Andrew Giusti Memorial Award. The award is given out annually in memory of Andy Giusti, a former Board member, scientist and colorectal cancer patient to honor advocates who work in the research environment. Pat was a consumer reviewer for the Department of Defense?s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program in 2011 which funds research for colorectal cancer, among other cancers.

It was awesome to see this amazing woman receive the recognition that she so rightly deserved. But even then, she was beginning to show some cracks in her granite facade.

Near the end I literally winced when I would read Pats posts. The last few months she held nothing back in her tell it like it is fashion. Most of us knew of her situation and I think we gave her a lot of slack. Others with less knowledge, sensitivity or both felt the need to pick up their swords against her. I stayed silent on the board, but would occasionally send her private messages on Facebook letting her know I was thinking of her. I wondered to myself if she was trying to push people away so they wouldn?t reach out to her or feel sorry for her in her final months. Strong, fierce and independent to the very end.

I confess that my psyche has been more than a little shaken by the loss of Pat. We?ve lost many of our own and I mourn each and every one of their lives. But Pat?s passing has hit me especially hard. Pat led by example and I followed her lead. If Pat could do it, then I could too. Whether it was advocating in the legislature or in my own doctors office, I learned these things from Pat. I will miss her knowledge, her expertise, her passion. The Board will go on, but it will be a little quieter and more civil without Pat on the sidelines. Pat was unique and special. In time, the majority of the folks here won?t even recognize her name or know of her at all. Such is life. As for me, a part of Pat will be with me always and I am a better person for having known her. And Pat, in your honor, I will strive to always ?Live Life Out Loud?. Good bye my friend, I will miss you terribly.

Chemical bond discovered that only exists in space

There's a new bond in town, and this secret agent works best in extreme situations.

The bond, of the chemical variety, occurs in the presence of very strong magnetic fields, such as those found around ultra-dense white dwarf stars. Its discovery not only demonstrates the existence of an unfamiliar and exotic type of chemistry, it may also give insight into the behaviours of these mysterious stellar bodies.

White dwarfs are the remnant cores of low-mass stars that have exhausted all their fuel. They are thought to be the final state for most of the stars in our galaxy. Though they have masses comparable to that of our sun, white dwarfs only occupy the same amount of space as a small planet like Earth, making them incredibly dense.

They also exhibit super-strong magnetic fields on the order of 100,000 Tesla ? 10 billion times greater than Earth's magnetic field, and 10 million times greater than that of an average refrigerator magnet. This intense field can affect the behaviour of the electrons that make up chemical bonds.

Exclusion principle

On Earth, atoms usually bond either covalently, by sharing electrons with neighbouring atoms, or ionically, via electrostatic attractions created by the transferral of electrons.

The electrons that give rise to these bonds are governed by the Pauli exclusion principle: two cannot occupy the same quantum state simultaneously. To avoid this scenario, electrons in bonds normally pair up in couples of opposing spin. But under the intense magnetic field of a white dwarf, "this spin interacts with the external field, acting like a little magnet," says lead author Kai Lange at the University of Oslo in Norway.

As a result, the spins of both electrons align with the external field, forcing one of the electrons to move into a different position known as an anti-bonding orbital. Normally, this would spell the end of any chemical bonds. "In a normal molecule these anti-bonding orbitals are not occupied by electrons," says Lange. "If they are occupied, the atoms are no longer bound together and the molecule breaks apart."

Unfamiliar chemistry

Lange and his colleagues wondered if things might be different around white dwarfs. "Chemistry and molecular physics become very different in the presence of a strong magnetic field," says Erik Tellgren, Lange's colleague. "Even very simple systems behave in exotic and unfamiliar ways compared to what we are used to under normal conditions."

With this in mind, the researchers used quantum chemical simulations to model chemical bonding in hydrogen and helium atoms in the magnetic field of a white dwarf. In both cases, the atoms were drawn into strongly bonded pairs.

Because the electrons in these bonded atoms occupied anti-bonding orbitals ? which is forbidden in both types of known chemical bond ? the researchers say this is a new type of bond. They have dubbed it "perpendicular paramagnetic bonding".

The work shows that "molecules that don't exist under normal conditions can exist in a sufficiently large magnetic field," says Lange.

David Clary of Oxford University, who was not involved in the study, called the research "excellent", adding that "the results show that a magnetic field can stabilise molecules".

Reading the stars

Although the authors say that replicating the new bonds on Earth isn't feasible, the finding highlights how molecular chemistry may change in the presence of extreme conditions.

"I think there are probably other weird or unfamiliar types of bonding to be discovered," says Tellgren.

Such work will also help to further our knowledge of astrophysical objects like white dwarfs. By understanding how matter behaves around these objects, it may be possible to interpret their observed spectra more easily and accurately, and to better unravel what is happening in their atmospheres.

Proclaim ABS Personal Injury Case Management Software - Express

?Any PI organisation wanting to survive and thrive must seriously consider adopting Proclaim ABS PI.?
James Maxey, Partner

Express Solicitors is a specialist accident and medical claims practice, dedicated to providing an expert and unrivalled service on a no-win, no-fee basis.

The Challenge
With the introduction of Alternative Business Structures (ABS), Express Solicitors required an integrated solution for nose-to-tail management of personal injury claims. Of key importance were scalability (Express employs over 100 staff and is expanding rapidly) and the ability to manage work processes within claims management, personal injury litigation and medical reporting.

The Solution
Eclipse?s Proclaim ABS PI solution is the market?s only system dedicated to the requirements of ABS-era personal injury organisations. Proclaim ABS PI was implemented across all Express business units, providing a complete solution at every step of the claims process.

The Results
The system allows Express to take a global approach to its cases, regardless of entry point into the business or the type of claim. As Proclaim manages files across FNOL (first notification of loss), medical reporting and litigation, Express staff have access to a centralised dashboard for viewing and tracking otherwise complex and disparate data and timelines

By utilising dedicated Proclaim workflows dependent upon the type and stage of claim, Express is assured of a consistent and quality approach to personal injury caseloads. All administrative chores are automated, freeing up ?value adding? time at every step of the process.

Express has ambitious plans to expand further, following a ?3million investment in early 2012, and sees Proclaim as the perfect partner to facilitate that growth.

AP Interview: Death row inmate says new law unfair

(AP) ? Daniel Webb is awaiting execution for the 1989 kidnapping and murder of a Connecticut bank executive, but he believes he is also paying a price for another, unrelated crime that has heavily influenced the state's debate on capital punishment.

Webb told The Associated Press in a death row interview that he thinks there would be no capital punishment in the state if not for the public's desire to execute the men responsible for the 2007 home-invasion slayings of a mother and her two daughters in suburban Cheshire. The only survivor of that crime, Dr. William Petit, lobbied to keep the death penalty for the men who killed his family, Steven Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky.

"Dr. Petit is angry with them and with his anger he wants to kill all of us," said Webb, who spoke by telephone from behind a glass window. "Now you are trying to increase my suffering and take away the little that I had because you want to make Komisarjevsky suffer. That's not right."

Webb was sentenced to die for the slaying in Hartford of Diane Gellenbeck, a 37-year-old Connecticut National Bank vice president, who was taken from a downtown parking garage and shot to death near a local golf course as she ran from an attempted sexual assault.

The state legislature in April abolished capital punishment, but only for future crimes. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and key state lawmakers had insisted on that as a condition of their support for repeal in a long-running debate that focused on the Petit case.

"If you are going to abolish the death penalty, abolish the death penalty," said Webb. "I don't think you can have a law that has double standards. Abolish means abolish, doesn't it?"

A spokesman for Malloy declined to comment on Webb's assertion.

William Petit's sister, Hanna Petit Chapman, said she does not care what Webb thinks. She compared him to her relatives' killers for laying blame with others.

"His condemnation is a direct result of his choices and actions. His finger pointing and blaming others sounds very familiar to what we heard from Komisarjevsky and Hayes. He could have let her go, yet, chose to shoot her five times when she escaped. I am not sure how that translates to being my family's fault," she said.

The balding, bearded Webb also complained during the hour-long interview Friday that the conditions of his confinement are unbearable and amount to torture.

Death-row inmates at Northern Correctional Institution are kept isolated in 8-by-12 foot cells with almost no human contact, even with other death-row inmates. They are given an hour of recreation a day, alone in cell-sized cages in the prison yard.

Webb, 49, says he has no friends on death row. He can only communicate by shouting through his steel door or into an air vent, something he says makes conversations with other inmates almost impossible.

Correction Department spokesman Brian Garnett described the conditions as humane and constitutional.

The mother of Webb's victim is not sympathetic. Dorothy Gellenbeck, 86, said Webb deserves to live in the harshest conditions and to die for killing her daughter.

"I have had a lot of years to miss my girl," Gellenbeck said from her home in Pennington, N.J. "I don't care what the new Connecticut law is. He is guilty of murder and at the time of the murder the death penalty was in effect. And why should he live, when he killed someone?"

Connecticut's only execution since 1960 came in 2005, after serial killer Michael Ross voluntarily gave up his appeals.

"I can now see what can push a man to that point," said Webb. "I'd rather be dead than live like this."

Webb said he attempted to hang himself in January, and later wrote a letter to court officials asking to give up his appeals and be executed. He has since rescinded that decision, saying lawyers and mental health professionals convinced him to wait and see how legal challenges to the death penalty are received.

Chief State's Attorney Kevin Kane testified during public hearings this spring that he expects inmates to challenge the constitutionality of keeping them on death row by arguing the sentence is now unfairly applied based on the date of the crime.

Webb said he also has evolved and matured since 1989. Nobody, he said, should be held in isolation, just waiting to die.

"I'm still human," he said. "People grow. Even people as despised as Joshua or Hayes, they can change over time."

Ban-Asbestos-India: International Commission on Occupational ...

The International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) is an international non-governmental professional society whose aims are to foster the scientific progress, knowledge and development of occupational health and safety in all its aspects. It was founded in 1906 in Milan as the Permanent Commission on Occupational Health. Today, ICOH is the world's leading international scientific society in the field of occupational health with a membership of 2,000 professionals from 93 countries. The ICOH is recognised by the United Nations as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) and has close working relationships with ILO, WHO, UNEP and ISSA.

After a large consultation, large discussion, several comments among ICOH working groups, members of the ICOH Board and NGOs? representatives, the ICOH President, Dr. Kazutaka Kogi, approved the ICOH Statement on Global Asbestos Ban and the Elimination of Asbestos-related Diseases. We strongly thank all those who have given their contribution dedicating their time and work on it. We hope this ICOH statement represent an important tool towards the global asbestos ban and the elimination of all asbestos-related diseases.

ICOH Statement on Global Asbestos Ban and the Elimination of Asbestos-related Diseases

The International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) calls for a global ban on the mining, sale and use of all forms of asbestos and the elimination of asbestos-related diseases. To accomplish the elimination of asbestos-related diseases, we urge each and every individual country to implement a total ban on production and use of asbestos. We also urge complementary efforts aimed at primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of asbestos-related diseases through country-specific ?National Programmes for Elimination of Asbestos-Related Diseases? in line with ILO and WHO guidelines.

Malignant asbestos-related diseases include lung cancer, mesothelioma and cancers of the ovary and larynx.1) There is sufficient evidence that amphibole asbestos (e.g., crocidolite) and serpentine asbestos (e.g., chrysotile) both cause malignancies of the lung, pleura and peritoneum.1) Non- malignant asbestos-related diseases include asbestosis and pleural abnormalities such as pleural thickening, pleural calcification and pleural effusion.2)

International consensus has recommended that a total ban on production and use of all forms of asbestos is the best way to eliminate the occurrence of asbestos-related diseases. In 2006 WHO stated that the most efficient way to eliminate asbestos-related diseases is to stop using all types of asbestos.3) The ILO Resolution on Asbestos, 2006, calls for eliminating the use of asbestos and identifying and properly managing asbestos currently in place as the most effective means to protect workers from asbestos and to prevent future asbestos-related diseases and deaths.4) By government decision, a number of countries have already adopted a universal ban on all types of asbestos based on recognition of the substantial human and economic burden of diseases caused by asbestos. Some other countries have banned the use of amphibole asbestos, predominantly crocidolite, but have not banned the use of chrysotile. As there is sufficient evidence by the International Agency on Research on Cancer (IARC 2012) that chrysotile causes malignancies of the lung, pleura and peritoneum, amphibole-only bans are inadequate; asbestos bans need to include chrysotile as well.

Some countries have banned the production and/or use of asbestos-containing industrial products, but have continued to mine, sell and export asbestos. This is an unacceptable policy and should be reconsidered by those countries. In order to be effective, a total ban on production, use and export of all forms of asbestos should be achieved in every country.

Even after a total ban on production and use of asbestos is achieved, occupational exposures to asbestos will persist due to the continued presence of asbestos from prior use in building materials and durable machinery/equipment. Workers who carry out maintenance, demolition and removal of asbestos-containing materials will thus continue to be at risk. Therefore a set of protective measures must be implemented to optimize effective prevention. The adoption of a total ban on all use of asbestos and products, equipment and materials containing asbestos implies a need to follow up the implementation of the ban with supplementary regulations and national programmes for ensuring the elimination of all use of asbestos and the required protection from exposure to asbestos. This includes, as appropriate, the review of legislation and regulatory systems regarding trade and the protection of consumers and external environment.

Primary prevention involves ensuring control of exposures to airborne asbestos fibres, monitoring concentrations according to established standards and reporting exposure levels to appropriate authorities. There is no exposure level below which asbestos-related disease risk can be totally eliminated. To minimize asbestos exposure, reference exposure limits (i.e., threshold limit values or occupational exposure limits) should adhere to international norms. Complying with these limits will reduce, but not totally eliminate, the risk of asbestos-related diseases. Exposed workers should be informed about their working conditions and associated hazards, and provided with appropriate respirators. While respirators should not be relied upon as the sole means of routinely limiting exposure to asbestos fibres, workers provided with them should be trained for their proper use, and encouraged to wear them when warranted. Adequate fitting, changing of filters, sanitary storage and maintenance of respirators are also required for optimal protection. Licensing or authorization procedures need to be considered to ensure safe handling, repair, maintenance and demolishing operations. Ambient air levels at the boundary of demolition sites adjacent to residential areas should be strictly monitored and kept below exposure limits. Proper and safe handling of asbestos-contaminated waste is essential. Finally, in view of the synergistic effect of smoking and asbestos exposure on lung cancer risk, smoking cessation programmes are essential for all workers currently and previously exposed to asbestos.

Secondary prevention includes medical monitoring of exposed workers, early diagnosis and individual case management to prevent disease progression. Secondary prevention is not effective for mesothelioma and is not yet proven to be effective for lung cancer among asbestos exposed workers, but workers identified with early asbestosis can be transferred away from further exposure with the intent of slowing progression of their disease. Malignant and non-malignant asbestos-related diseases can be diagnosed according to established guidelines.2, 5)

Tertiary prevention includes medical intervention and public health services to limit disease-related disability and help workers affected by asbestos-related diseases to cope with chronic effects of their disease. Appropriate medical care and rehabilitation for the diseases and their potential complications, including immunization against pulmonary infections, should be provided. After disability and impairment evaluation, just compensation and disability benefits should also be provided, as warranted.

Individuals with asbestos-related diseases should be reported to authorities and public health registries. Public health surveillance of asbestos-related diseases, in particular malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and pleural abnormalities, can help track progress towards eliminating asbestos-related diseases and may identify where further primary prevention efforts are needed. Public health surveillance of reported exposure levels can also be used to target enhanced primary prevention.

Achieving a worldwide ban on the mining, sale and use of all forms of asbestos and the elimination of asbestos-related diseases will require that physicians and occupational health personnel responsibly and persistently express their concerns, raise awareness and take necessary action regarding the need to prevent asbestos-related diseases. Recognizing the urgent need for coordinated actions, ICOH will continue to foster global and national collaboration in this endeavour, promoting the engagement of ICOH members in training occupational medicine and health professionals in competencies needed to support comprehensive national efforts to eliminate asbestos-related diseases.

'Ice Age: Continental Drift' and 'The Lorax' battle for Chinese viewers

'Ice Age: Continental Drift' is opening the same weekend in China as 'The Lorax.' Why is China forcing two Hollywood movies to compete for ticket sales?

China?s government-controlled film distributor is releasing two of Hollywood?s biggest 3-D animated movies of the year on the same weekend, forcing them to compete head-on and potentially denting their ticket sales in the world?s second-most-lucrative market.

The movies ? 20th Century Fox?s sequel ?Ice?Age: Continental Drift? and ?The Lorax? from Universal Pictures ? will both be released July 27 by China Film Group. In the U.S. and elsewhere, the two family pictures were released months apart to avoid cannibalizing each other?s box office.

Jiang Defu, a spokesman for China Film, said the overlapping release dates were simply the result of a crowded calendar in the busiest month for Chinese audiences.

RECOMMENDED: The 50 best movies of all time

Twentieth Century Fox and Universal have not been given an official reason for the conflicting release dates, according to executives close to both studios. But people familiar with the Chinese movie market who were not authorized to speak publicly speculated that the government may be intentionally trying to limit each film?s take at the box office.

Figures released this week show that American films dominated the Chinese box office in the first half of the year. Although Chinese officials are proud of their film market?s rapid ascension ? it now trails only the U.S. in ticket sales ? the lack of Chinese blockbusters has been a sensitive subject for a country that wants to increase its ?soft power.?

Forcing the American films to compete head to head could curtail their grosses and help boost homegrown movies? share of the Chinese box office.

Several U.S. executives noted that it?s unusual for China to open two movies targeting the same audience on the same date, particularly two 3-D pictures in a country where the technology is hugely popular. (In the U.S., studios try to avoid such face-offs by scheduling release dates early and changing them when competition crops up, but they have no control over how China Film schedules and markets their movies.)

Jiang dismissed such speculation, noting that the recently released Chinese movies ?Caught in the Web? and ?Painted Skin: The Resurrection? also opened the same week.

?China?s film market is very competitive. It?s very common to see many movies to go head to head against each other,? Jiang said. ?Since blockbuster Chinese movies like those two can be released the same (week) in China, I don?t understand why two American movies can?t go head to head against each other.?

He added that in a month in which seven or eight movies are typically released every week, ?it?s really hard for a movie to enjoy a completely competition-free release.? Jiang said foreign movies also need to receive approval from Chinese censors, which can complicate release schedules.

China generated more than $2 billion in box office in 2011 and is on track to top $3 billion this year.

Switched On: Android's TV Triple Threat

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

DNP Switched On Android's TV Triple Threat

Just two years ago, Google TV paved a way for Android to enter the television via integrated sets, Blu-ray players, dedicated TV add-ons and pay TV set-top devices. For now, the product may almost be as much of a hobby for the purveyor of questionable eyewear as Apple TV is for Apple, Google's mobile OS competitor. But it's clear that the platform isn't all things to all couch potatoes; the last several weeks have seen the launch of two new, contrasting approaches to getting Android on the big screen in the home.

Appeals court delays Galaxy Nexus ban

Android

A federal appeals court today said that Google and Samsung can resume selling the Galaxy Nexus while awaiting a response from Apple, Bloomberg reported this afternoon. The temporary stay is in effect until Apple responds on July 12.

The case reached the appeals level after U.S. District Judge in the past week ruled that Android was infringing on a search patent owned by Apple (also known as the '604 or "Siri" patent) and that the Galaxy Nexus could no longer be sold until the infringing feature was removed or changed.

Google on Tuesday listed the Galaxy Nexus as "Coming soon" in the Google Play store, and it remains that way as of this writing. Google earlier this week told ABC News that it expects to have a workaround next week, and that the Galaxy Nexus should resume shipping then.

Archos raids the periodic table for new line of Android tablets, launches 97 Carbon slate

Image

Those worried that Archos hasn't introduced a line of low-cost Android tablets in a while have reason to breathe a collective sigh of relief. The company's gearing up for the launch of its "Elements" series, beginning with this month's release of the 97 Carbon. No chipmunks this time out, sadly, but the Ice Cream Sandwich slate does sport a 9.7-inch IPS display, a 1GHz processor, HDMI out and a full-sized USB port. Also on-board are two cameras, 16GB of storage and a microSD slot, packed into a 0.45-inch thick aluminum body. The 97 Carbon runs $230 to $250. Archos is promising more entries in the "entry-level" Elements lineup, measuring seven, eight and 9.7 inches. Press info on this particular model can be found after the break.

Iraqis face long future of fear as attacks mount

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Whenever he leaves his home, Mohammed Jabar, a Sunni Muslim, carries his cellphone so his family can find out quickly whether he is safe if a deadly bomb attack hits. Shukria Mahmud, another Sunni, rarely ventures from her house because of the rash of violence that is gripping Iraq.

Laith Hashim, a young Shiite Muslim, is considering moving away from Iraq if security continues to disintegrate. Such a breakdown, he fears, would spark a new round of bitter sectarian fighting of the kind that brought the nation to the brink of civil war just a few years ago.

Tensions simmer between Iraq's Sunni and Shiite communities, yet they share an increasingly widespread despair. Al-Qaida-style attacks are on the rise, faith in the government's ability to keep people safe is on the wane and a fatalistic acceptance of a life of fear is perniciously settling in.

Nine years after the U.S. led an invasion of Iraq that overthrew dictator Saddam Hussein ? purging the leadership and military of his supporters and leading to a fight against insurgents in a bloody guerrilla war that left more than 100,000 dead ? Iraq's outlook is increasingly bleak in summer 2012.

Instead of a Western-style democracy functioning in peace and cooperation, what's been left behind is dysfunctional and increasingly violent. Many of the attacks of the past month have targeted Shiites on annual religious pilgrimages, raising fears of a return to the deadly cycle of destructive violence between Sunni and Shiite communities.

"The Sunnis should be warned that there will be retaliation if the attacks against Shiites continue," Hashim, 18, said Wednesday in Baghdad's Sadr City neighborhood. The impoverished area in the capital's northeast is home to the Shiite Mahdi Army militia that battled al-Qaida during Iraq's darkest days between 2006 and 2008.

"Patience can't last forever," he warned.

Iraqi officials and experts say worries of an impending blowup is exactly what Sunni extremists linked to al-Qaida are banking on. Dozens of bloody bombings and drive-by shootings that have killed 286 people over the past four weeks, including 11 on Wednesday, bear the terrorist network's hallmarks. Most of the victims have been Shiite pilgrims, security forces and government officials ? three of al-Qaida's prime targets.

So far the surge in violence has fallen well short of open warfare. Iraqis fear it's more likely they're destined to struggle through years of misery without fully hitting bottom, before things get much better.

Part of the problem is the dysfunctional Iraqi government that, so far this year, has failed to protect its public or settle internal power squabbles.

"We do not have the right to think about the future, because nobody is sure whether he is going to stay alive even for the next few minutes," said Jabar, 22, a hotel employee in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk. "We might die anytime and anywhere, so it is useless to think about what will happen for the years ahead."

Several people interviewed across Iraq on Wednesday said there's no doubt their lives have gone downhill recently, and hope for improvement is waning.

"We used to say that tomorrow will be better than today," said Firas Hadi, 41, a Shiite who owns car accessory shop in Baghdad. "But today, we say today is better than tomorrow."

Mahmud, 57, the Sunni woman, said the violence has made her think twice about going outside, although "we have to leave every once in a while to get some fresh air." Walking with her niece in the Sunni-dominated Mansour neighborhood in Baghdad, she observed, "We can't just stay home forever."

What's worrying about Iraq's recent wave of attacks is how they've increased in frequency and size. In the months before U.S. troops left, extremists were still launching large-scale attacks that killed dozens every few weeks, but analysts said they needed the time in between to coordinate and gather explosives.

A relative drop in the number of attacks in recent months had raised cautious hopes that life might inch back toward normal, despite political struggles, the corruption and an administration that can't even provide more than a few hours of electricity each day in the capital.

But starting in June, no more than three days passed without a major attack, showing the insurgency's ability to regroup more quickly. Experts say the extremists may have been emboldened by the government's obvious distraction by feuding between Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his political rivals among Sunnis, Kurds and some other Shiite politicians who complain he is amassing too much power in his own hands.

Iraqis, certainly, mince no words in blaming their leaders for the violence.

"The security situation will be improved only when the politicians stop their daily fighting over personal ambitions," said Qassim Salman, 65, a Shiite who owns a video arcade in the southern city of Basra.

Whatever the cause, the surge in violence has rekindled a gloomy sense among Iraqis ? a feeling that nine years later, the Americans have moved on, and they are left facing an immediate future of grinding violence.

"This is not a normal life. How long do we have to live in fear?" asked Fuad Karim, 63, a Shiite who runs a laundry in Baghdad's Kazimiyah neighborhood.

Karim opposed the U.S. invasion, but he also said the American pullout, completed Dec. 18, was a mistake.

"They messed up the country, and they had to reorganize it and to rebuild what they demolished," he said. "Right up until now, nothing has been rebuilt."

Others, like Baghdad shopkeeper Ali Izzat, a Sunni, said he's happy the Americans are gone. "They were occupiers, and we see them as oppressors."

Izzat isn't fazed much by the recent attacks, though he allowed it might be because he's seen so much worse: His shop in Baghdad's mostly Sunni Harthiya neighborhood damaged by bombs three times in 2007.

"We feel sorry for the victims, of course," he said, when asked if Iraq's bloody past month worries him, displaying his innate sense of pessimism: "But because of all we have seen in the past, we are almost used to it."
