Rand Paul Takes Lead in GOP Chase for White House

Chris Christie doesn?t want to talk about the ?nonsense? of his feud with Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

Buzzfeed reports that at the National Governors Association summer meeting being held in Wisconsin from August 1-4, Christie told a reporter who asked him about the internecine spat, ?Yeah, we?re not talking about any of that stuff,? he said. ?We?re here to be governor. We?re not here to talk about that kind of nonsense. You all have a good day, though.?

It seems odd that the man Paul dubbed the ?King of Bacon? would be demonstrating such remarkable self-restraint when a reporter sets revenge on tee and hands him a bat.

Perhaps the answer lies less in a repentant reconsideration and more in political pragmatism, especially now that Rand Paul has reportedly taken the lead in ?The Chase? for the White House in 2016.

What is ?The Chase?? Creator David Catanese explains:

The start of every run?establishes a leader.

And then the chase ensues.

Hence, why we?ve branded our?contribution to the great?horserace dialogue, THE CHASE.

It?s a running ranking system of the most likely 2016 nominees, with?Clinton and Rubio starting at the top of the pack.

But there will be plenty of movement over the next 43 months and the idea at the outset is for you to help craft what running slot each candidate is in at any given moment.

THE RUN has selected 12 of the strongest potential nominees?for Republicans and Democrats?and divided them into two tiers.

On August 1, Catanese?? former Politico reporter?? revealed the latest news from his admittedly unscientific survey, and it won?t make Chris Christie very happy.

?Rand Paul is now the leader of the herd of Republicans who covet the 2016 GOP nomination for president,? Catanese writes, ?placing the Kentucky senator at the top of The CHASE?this month for the first time.?

How did Paul eclipse Christie, Marco Rubio, Rick Perry, Ted Cruz, and other would-be Oval Office occupiers? Catanese says it was the events of the Summer of Paul. He reports:

? He chose to engage Chris Christie?s broadside and **at least** matched him punch for punch, yet also showcased his willingness to deescalate by proposing a beer summit. This continuing fisticuffs raised Rand?s stature and vindicated him as a mover of opinion inside the wayward Republican Party. Oh, and there?s the polling that shows R?s moving in Rand?s direction on the substance of the foreign policy fracas.

? He?s atop polls everywhere. Nationally ? and fighting Marco Rubio to a virtual draw in Iowa. Conservatives are flocking towards Paul while punishing the Florida senator for his involvement in the immigration bill. Women dig him ? and he?s basically performing as well against Clinton as Marco is.

? He?s owning the media cycle ? becoming a ubiquitous presence on television ? mostly FOX ? while traversing the country ? Iowa, Nevada, Tennessee ? earning headlines and local chits along the way.

Christie, by the way, maintains his top-tier billing, but he has slipped into fourth in The Chase, behind frontrunner Paul, Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.

Eight others populate Tier Two: Jeb Bush; Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin; Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal; former Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania; Texas Governor Rick Perry; Ohio Governor John Kasich; Senator Ted Cruz of Texas; and former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman. Three of them ? Santorum, Perry, and Huntsman ? ran for president in 2012.

Fortunately for Christie?? who famously cozied up to President Obama?? the Establishment media gets it and has provided the portly governor with some campaign calisthenics that will help him sprint past Paul and the others. On August 2, the Washington Post proposed the following training regimen:

1. Win big this year. The larger the margin in his reelection race in New Jersey, the more credibility he will have as the GOP candidate who can win outside of traditionally conservative strong holds.

2. Keep talking about national security, which is the biggest challenge for most governors. He struck a nerve when he bashed Sen.?Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who eventually cried uncle. Christie has the advantage of experience in counter-terrorism as a prosecutor. If Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee, Christie will be well-versed in the disasters she allowed to develop on her watch at the State Department.

3. Do some traveling and some listening on foreign policy, bringing in an array of advisers who are credible and respected. Starting now saves him from cramming later.

4. Lay out some conservative agenda items for the next year in Trenton, N.J., on health care, taxes and education to capitalize on his reelection and remind Republicans how effective a conservative executive can be. On the national level, he can put forth some of his successful initiatives and also crib from reformers on the national stage, including Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.)

5. Go ahead and throw some punches at national Democrats and at liberals more generally. Christie can remind the right that when it comes to pummeling adversaries there is no one tougher and more amusing. He?s taken on the teachers? unions, now what about the radical environmentalists who are blocking domestic energy production?

7. Campaign for some Republicans in 2014, thereby getting his face out there and earning some chits from future lawmakers.

8. Lock down the Eastern corridor donors and the rest of Mitt Romney?s donor list; he?s got the ability to starve other candidates of funds and set up an effective financial team for 2016.

9. Be the grown up in the 2016 race and keep up the barrage against Washington, D.C., antics. Fostering the role of the common sense, tough-minded adult won?t take much effort considering some of the competition.

10. Make more appearances in nonpolitical media, evidencing his likability and ease with popular culture.

(Number 6 is missing in the original Post piece).

Maybe Christie should read the results of a McClatchy-Marist poll from last month before he?s convinced to sign up for campaign cardio.

According to a report on the survey, ??Unsure?? tops the field as the choice of one-fourth of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents. Among actual potential candidates, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie leads with 15 percent, followed closely by the party?s 2012 vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

When it comes to the prospects for rolling back the federal government?s unconstitutional surveillance or eliminating the myriad unconstitutional agencies and departments of the executive branch, there is little hope that Christie will do anything differently from the current president.

Regardless of who moves into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in January 2017, the fight to restore the republic back to its constitutional foundation will remain in the states, each of which has not only the right but the responsibility to reject each and every unconstitutional act of the federal government and reestablish themselves as the bulwarks of liberty they were intended to be.

Heat Waves Make Cities Swelter Synergistically

60-Second Science

Heat waves in cities interact synergistically with the urban heat island effect to raise temperatures more than would be expected from a simple summation calculation. Christopher Intagliata reports.

More 60-Second Science

No wonder it?s gonna be a hot time in the old town tonight. Cities can be anywhere from two to 20 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than nearby countryside, due to what?s known as the "urban heat island" effect. But when heat waves roll through, they interact synergistically with the urban heat island?boosting temperatures even higher than you might expect.

Researchers used a June 2008 heat wave in Baltimore as a case study. They compared temperatures downtown to those near the Baltimore/Washington International Airport?a residential, half-forested area. Using modeling software, they found that temperatures downtown weren't simply a sum of the urban heat island and the heat wave?they were three and a half degrees hotter than that. The results appear in the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology. [Dan Li and Elie Bou-Zeid, Synergistic Interactions between Urban Heat Islands and Heat Waves: the Impact in Cities is Larger than the Sum of its Parts]

Urban areas are carpeted in asphalt and concrete, which don't hold water like soil and vegetation do. So while the countryside sweats during a heat wave, cooling itself through evaporation, the city just bakes. But researchers say there's a simple solution to beat the heat: install green roofs, and plant some trees. Which would help the concrete jungle live up to the second half of its name.

Vandals jeopardize youth baseball team's fall season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- On a late summer evening in south Charlotte, kids practice baseball anticipating tryouts for the fall season. It is an almost perfect picture, except for one thing.
?

The outfield fence is lying on the ground and the snack shack next to the playing field is nothing but charred ashes.
?

John Smith is President of Sardis Dixie Youth Baseball.
?

"At first it was utter disbelief," Smith said.
?

He is the one who found the snack shack burned down last April.
?

Fire investigators believe vandals set fire to a porta-john and as it burned it collapse onto the snack shack.
?

Smith's son, Jackson, is one of the players.
?

"Why would they do that," wondered Jackson.
?

But there was more to come.
?

Over the Fourth of July holiday, someone rammed through the outfield fence in a vehicle and then sped off.
?

With a broken fence, the kids will not be able to play here for the fall season that begins in September.
?

"I'm not one to hold a grudge," the elder Smith said. "I just want to get the fence fixed so that I can keep the field running for these kids."
?

Estimates are it will cost about $800 to repair the fence in time for the fall season.
?

Rebuilding the snack shack will be a lot more expensive.
?

"Early estimates from contractors I have spoke to say between three and $5,000," said Smith.
?

Smith is hoping some local businesses will step in and help.

New York City's George Washington Bridge to undergo major construction project starting Monday

FORT LEE, N.J. -- California had its "Carmageddon," complete with sequel. Now, New York could be staring at its own potential transportation disaster.

Officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey were hoping for the best Friday as they announced plans to close three of four lanes on the heavily traveled upper deck of the George Washington Bridge to replace sections of the steel beams that support the roadway.

The work is expected to last through the end of the year and will be performed during overnight hours -- not that that will be any comfort to the estimated 20,000 vehicles that cross the span during those hours on weeknights, or the 50,000 that cross on weekend nights.

The bridge has two levels: Trucks are restricted to the upper level, which has four lanes in each direction. The lower level has three lanes in each direction and is not part of the current repair project. Crews will cut, remove and replace more than 600 deck panels -- steel topped with asphalt -- using two large cranes.

Delays of 45 to 60 minutes are expected, but that could be an optimistic assessment. A test run two weeks ago produced 90-minute-delays, albeit with no public notification, said Port Authority tunnels, bridges and terminals director Cedrick Fulton.

"There are going to be delays, no question about it," Fulton said. "We're trying to communicate with the public and urge them to change their driving habits. We're trying to push as many cars as possible down (to the lower level)."

About 300,000 vehicles per day cross the 82-year-old span, which carries Interstate 95 from northern New Jersey across upper Manhattan and northeast into Connecticut. The upper deck opened in 1931, and the lower deck was added in 1962.

About 7 percent of those vehicles travel in the overnight hours during the week and would be affected by the lane closures, Port Authority officials said Friday. That number rises to 17 percent on weekend nights.

The $82 million repair will replace the steel beams underlying the upper deck roadway, which were last replaced in the late 1970s. They were designed to have a 20-year life span, but tests every two years showed they had maintained their integrity, Fulton said. But in recent years, according to bridge chief structural engineer Bernard Yostpille, small cracks had begun to crop up with greater frequency, leading to increasing repairs. The bridge was never in danger from the cracks, said Andrea Giorgi Bocker, engineer of construction for the bridge.

The repairs are being funded by phased-in toll increases implemented in 2011 that will ultimately raise cash tolls from $8 to $15.

Fulton said one concern is that some motorists won't take the warnings seriously because a project last year to shore up a structure on the New York side of the bridge led to far shorter delays than were expected.

Two years ago, a weekend-long closure of a portion of Interstate 405 in Los Angeles was dubbed "Carmageddon" but didn't produce anything resembling the epic traffic jams that many feared. Another weekend closure last fall didn't produce "Carmageddon II," as many motorists stayed off the road.

The George Washington Bridge work is to begin Monday at 11 p.m. in the westbound lanes and will shift to the eastbound lanes the following Monday. The Port Authority plans to extend the hours gradually until the closures last from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weeknights and 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. on weekends.

Work schedules also will be tailored around the New York Yankees' home games in the Bronx, Port Authority officials said.

Top 10 Business Networking Tips for Entrepreneurs | UGO News

Are you a budding entrepreneur or even an established one but experiencing trouble with growing your business through harnessing relationships, here are the Top 10 Business Networking Tips to grow your personal profile and therefore business, according to Jason Razar:

Top 10 Networking Tips for Entrepreneurs

Top 10 Networking Tips for Entrepreneurs

1. Meet More?? the key to any meet-up is first to meet others. ?Seems like that would be rather self explanatory. ? But inevitably most meet-ups end up resembling a junior high playground where the 3 people that know each other stay huddled in a corner, wondering why the other kids are having more fun. ?The biggest mistake most folks make is that they don?t meet more new people. Make it your goal at every meet-up to approach 10 people you don?t already know.

?

2. Get Business Cards, Don?t Give Them?? when you meet new important contacts don?t bother giving them your business card unsolicited, they?ll just end up in business card purgatory. ?Do make sure to get their contact information and right then and there send them a follow up email, facebook/linkedin request, twitter shout out and you?ll meaningfully increase your odds of staying in touch.

Business Networking Tips

Business Networking Tips

3. Be the Connector?? there is great value in positioning yourself as the person that can connect people at networking events and meet-ups. Take the time to introduce people that might be able to work together, are looking for jobs, or could be co-founders. ? By positioning yourself as a connector at meet-ups you?ll find your professional/social credibility climbing steadily.

?

4.?Do Favors for Others: the law of reciprocity dictates that people want to help other who help them. Most folks at meet-ups spend most of their time talking about themselves or seeing what they can get out of the situation. By being the person that focuses on helping others you?ll instantly stand out among the crowd and will build a bank account full of goodwill that you?ll be able to repeatedly withdraw from in the future.

?

5.?Make Sure Others Know What You Do?? how many times have you left a conversation with a long winded person, still having no idea what they really do. ? Make sure everyone you talk to knows what you do, and could easily explain it to anyone else at the meet-up. ?Your goal is to have lots of people talking about you, and it starts by having others easily be able to communicate what you?re all about.

?

6.?Social Proof is Key?? don?t make the mistake of telling others how great you are, get other people to do it for you. ? Having someone else at the meet-up point you out or suggest that you?re an important person to get to know, is infinitely more valuable than anything you could do to talk yourself up.

?

7.?Don?t Talk to Anyone for Too Long?? the purpose of a meet-up is to meet as many people as you can, and likely no meaningful business will get accomplished there. Your goal is not to have a very thorough conversation with one person, it?s to identify as many people as possible that you might be able to work or connect with in the future. Have lots of short, to the point, relevant conversations and you?ll open up the most opportunity.

?

8.?Set Up Meetings Outside of Meetups?? you can do everything right at the meet-up but if the connections end there, it?s all for not. Make sure to set up follow up 1 on 1 meetings where you can really sit down and get to know someone and build more meaningful relationships.

9.?Be the Organizer?? there is a lot more value being the organizer than the attendee, mostly because everyone knows the organizer. ?It may be more work up front, but the professional dividends that pay out over time make it well worth it.

?

10.?Don?t Spend Too Much Time in the Meet-up Scene?? even a good thing can be taken too far. ?Some folks seem to be at every meet-up and are always the last to leave, but don?t necessarily seem to be getting anywhere in their professional career. ? If you find yourself associating with the same people at meet-ups time and time again, none of whom are making meaningful progress on a new venture or job, it might be time to do more doing and less meeting.

?

So, if you are looking to grow your business relations, follow these tips and you will be headed for success.

BoE readies guidance push, under wraps for now

By William Schomberg

LONDON (Reuters) - The Bank of England and its new governor Mark Carney will put the finishing touches to a fresh approach to nurturing Britain's nascent economic recovery on Thursday, when the central bank wraps up a policy meeting.

But financial markets will probably have wait a few more days before getting details of the long-awaited steer on how long interest rates are likely to stay at their record low.

At his Bank first policy meeting nearly a month ago, Carney surprised investors with a warning that they were pricing in a rate hike too soon.

That pushed down sterling and British government yields, and launched Carney's governorship with a bang.

Economists are taking no chances this time around. They have warned of the outside possibility of a cut to the Bank's benchmark interest rate or more measures by the Monetary Policy Committee to try to encourage banks to lend to businesses.

JP Morgan entitled a note to clients: "Covering all the bases for tomorrow's MPC meeting." It put the chances of a change in policy at 20 percent.

The most likely scenario is that the bank holds interest rates at 0.5 percent and keeps on ice its bond-buying programme which has been dormant since October.

It is also expected to keep a lid, for now, on whatever agreement policymakers strike on how to convince households, businesses and markets that borrowing costs will remain low.

The MPC announcement is due to be made at 1200 BST, shortly before the conclusion of the European Central Bank's monthly policy meeting which could provide more detail on its own plans to persuade markets that an interest rate hike is not on the cards.

The U.S. Federal Reserve offered no hint after its latest policy meeting ended on Wednesday that it plans to trim its stimulus programme soon, saying the U.S. economy is recovering but still needs support.

FROM OTTAWA TO LONDON

Carney used 'forward guidance' to help shield his native Canada from the worst of the financial crisis, pledging in 2009 to keep interest rates unchanged for more than a year.

It was that kind of bold move that caught the eye of British chancellor George Osborne who named Carney as the Bank's first ever foreign governor late last year.

Osborne has asked Carney and the rest of the Bank's policymakers to report back to him on August 7, alongside the bank's quarterly economic forecasts, on the merits of bringing forward guidance to Britain.

Unlike in Canada, where he needed consensus from his deputies at the country's central bank, Carney has to win over the Bank's nine-strong MPC, including its independent external policymakers.

Several of them have expressed concerns about making commitments on monetary policy which could hamper their ability to respond to changes in the economy. Signs of a turnaround in Britain have begun to appear in recent months.

But the economy remains more than 3 percent smaller than before the financial crisis and is vulnerable to interest rates creeping back up in financial markets, especially at the U.S. economy picks up and exerts pressure on British debt prices.

With all nine MPC members voting against further bond buying at their July 3-4 meeting, the bank's focus on protecting the recovery seems to lie with giving clear guidance on rates, possibly by making a hike conditional on a fall in unemployment.

"There seems little doubt that Mr. Carney and his MPC colleagues will want to ram home the message to businesses, consumers and the markets that any tightening of monetary policy is a very long way off," said Howard Archer, chief UK economist with IHS Global Insight in London.

'Masters of Sex' takes explicit look at sexuality

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? There's so much sex depicted on a new cable TV series about researchers Masters and Johnson that filming it became ho-hum for star Michael Sheen.

"I never thought I would get used to having a naked woman in front of me masturbating ... but I actually broke that barrier on the show," Sheen, who plays researcher William Masters, said Tuesday.

He plays opposite Lizzy Caplan as co-researcher and future wife Virginia Johnson in Showtime's "Masters of Sex," an explicit depiction of the pair and their groundbreaking mid-20th century scientific investigation of human sexuality.

The series, based on Thomas Maier's 2009 nonfiction book, debuts Sept. 29 on Showtime. Johnson died last week at age 88 in St. Louis. She was divorced from Masters, who died in 2001.

Sheen, whose film credits include "The Queen," said the story remains pertinent because the same "problems of intimacy" and making connections with people apply today.

During a Q&A session with the Television Critics Association, the difficulty of talking about sex publicly became apparent. One reporter asked the cast and producers how the series can include humor without appearing to titter at sexuality.

"We just had a slightly inappropriate look into your sex life. We all thank you for that," Sheen replied, drolly.

Caplan (TV's "True Blood," ''New Girl") said the researchers' work at Washington University in St. Louis and later at their own institute was especially important for women, allowing them to understand and accept their sexuality as healthy.

"Before Masters and Johnson, no one was telling women that. It was always their own fault," Caplan said. "And that's some (baloney)."

The series embellished some characters but "stuck to the facts very carefully," said producer Michelle Ashford. "Certainly (with) the research, we fudged none of that."

Masters and Johnson became big celebrities who were the topic of late-night talk show hosts and on the cover of news magazines. Their work drew some criticism, especially in an era when sex was seldom discussed in public and certainly not in detail.

The cast, asked whether filming sex scenes proved embarrassing, said there was a painstaking effort to protect the actors by making the production "comfortable and safe," Sheen said.

Cast member Teddy Sears recalled director John Madden saying, "I want to protect your modesty," then mimicked the British Madden giving a stage direction: "Grab her bum."

Doing repeated takes of one clinical sex scene turned out to be "decidedly unsexy after a while," Sears said.

The panelists, including executive producer Sarah Timberman, said they were not in touch with Johnson because they'd wanted to respect her privacy.

"She wanted to live out her the last few years of her life not in the limelight," Caplan said.

Johnson "bared her soul in the book (by Maier) and then was done with that," said producer Ashford.

Oprah Has Extravagant Lunch While On Safari In Africa

oprahsafari072913.jpg

What do you get for the woman who has everything?! The Serengeti of course!

Oprah and her main man Stedman Graham have been vacationing in Africa's Serengeti Plains and the media mogul has taken to Twitter and Instagram to document her amazing trip. During the safari holiday, the 59-year-old billionaire photographed cheetahs, elephants and other wild life. Oprah and Stedman, who have been going strong 27 years, also enjoyed a hot air balloon ride together, which Oprah wrote wrote about, saying, "favorite experience on Serengeti: Sunrise in Hot Air Balloon. A SuperSoulSunday moment indeed!

We don't know exactly what a "SuperSoulSunday" is but if it involves animals and a hot-air balloon ride -- we will take it!

After at the picturesque ride, Oprah had a lunch feast on the plains fit for a king -- or rather queen. Lady O posted a pic of the heavenly meal, complete with zebras prancing in the background, and wrote, "Safe landing. Gonna eat and run. Back to US, yay!"

Not a bad last meal before coming back to the US!

Oprah is no stranger to Africa -- she founded the ?Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls? in 2007, which is a boarding school for girls outside of Johannesburg in South Africa. The philanthropist has visited the school several times since it was founded.

Hey any billionaires out there want to take us on a safari? We don't eat much and we pack light!

St. Paul Mayor Coleman, Sir Richard Branson take a look at drug policy

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman touched on the thorny issue of drug policy reform Sunday at the Landmark Center after viewing a documentary about the war on drugs.

Coleman participated in a panel discussion along with Sir Richard Branson, the founder of the Virgin Group, who is promoting the documentary "Breaking the Taboo," which chronicles the supposed worldwide failures of the war on drugs.

Since it debuted in December, discussions about the film, which Branson's son, Sam, co-produced, have centered on the debate about whether drugs should be treated as a health problem rather than a criminal problem.

Richard Branson, a member of the Global Commission on Drug Policy, has been critical of the war on drugs. Coleman has been supportive of drug courts and other efforts that often promote rehabilitation over incarceration.

"When the drug courts were started in Hennepin County, there was a lot of controversy about that," Coleman told the audience that nearly filled the Landmark Center's 230-seat auditorium. "But people all of a sudden realized that there was a tremendous benefit. It got people in recovery ... and saved money."

Coleman noted that Minnesota has been at the forefront of recovery and often is referred to as the "land of 10,000 treatment centers."

"We do it as good as anybody," he said. "Addiction is painful, and it is really important that people have resources and places to turn."

Many audience members cheered as Coleman noted how the war on drugs has hit the African-American community especially hard.

"Again, I'm not here to advocate for deregulation of all drugs or anything. I'm just saying that this isn't working, and we're seeing the consequences of that," Coleman said.

Branson is believed to be one of the richest business moguls in Britain, and the Virgin Group -- which includes Virgin Atlantic Airways and Virgin Megastores -- spans more than 400 companies. Branson was in St. Paul to also attend the Starkey Hearing Foundation gala held at RiverCentre.

Treating addiction as a public health problem instead of a crime would reduce the money spent on law enforcement and incarceration, Branson said Sunday.

"The first step is (that) nobody caught with any kind of drug would ever be sent to prison," he said. "If they have a drug problem, they will be helped. That has worked in other countries around the world, and that would be great if that could be introduced here. Ask yourself if you'd want your brother, sister or children sent to prison or helped."

The others panelists Sunday were Sarah Gordon, an HIV counseling coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Health, and Naya Arbiter, vice president of the Amity Foundation, a nonprofit that provides drug treatment services in California, New Mexico and Arizona.

Filmed in eight countries and narrated by Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman, "Breaking the Taboo," launched online on Hulu.com last week.

More screenings are planned in more than 20 venues in the U.S., England, Thailand and Australia.

5 Things Bevacco And New Executive Chef Gabriele Corcos Can ...

Long time BHB readers may recall that we predicted here in 2007 that the North Heights was poised to become a culinary hot spot. So, with the the debut of Gabriele Corcos at Bevacco Friday night and with the opening of Sociale two blocks down Henry Street planned for Monday (7/29) it?s hard not to be amped up about that ?vision? becoming reality.

Despite our unbridled enthusiasm about his arrival, our experience at Bevacco Friday night for Corcos? debut as Executive Chef was less than spectacular. The food and new menu (which didn?t feel that new or different) is unremarkable comparatively speaking to, say, fellow TV chef Elizabeth Falkner?s run at Atlantic Avenue?s Krescendo. We?ll give Corcos a mulligan on that one considering he?s relatively new to the restaurant business.

Also of note is the revised drinks menu which shows much promise. That said, even a casual fan of Extra Virgin, the Cooking Channel show Corcos hosts with actress wife Debi Mazar, can feel that his creativity was a bit restrained on Night 1.

Yes, it was Corcos? first night and a new beginning for the eatery housed at the perpetually cursed ?Corner of Cranberry? but the long standing issue of slow, aloof and unorganized service that has plagued Bevacco since its opening continues to be its Achilles heel. While we found our meal to be competent ? like dinner at foodie friend?s house ? whatever satisfaction the food and drink provided was undermined by the usual crazy quilt of service at the eatery. And it wasn?t just us, the table next to us received a bottle of hot white wine. When they mentioned this to their server the reply was essentially, ?we don?t usually serve cold bottles of wine.?

The high profile Corcos did pop out of the kitchen to greet diners but from our perspective he appeared to ignore those he didn?t seem to know or to think were important. Most restaurants soft open for ?Friends and Family? before opening to the general public but if you?re allowing regular punters (like us!) to dine on Opening Night then everyone should be treated like ?Friends and Family.?

For example when our final drink order hadn?t arrived for over 20 minutes and our check was dropped and charging for those still undelivered drinks, Corcos bounded towards us with two limoncellos (the order we?d place and were still waiting for) in hand. That?s enough for us and most folks ? famous chef or not ? to salve even the worst episode of bad service. That is, unless the chef actually drops those drinks at another table he?d been hobnobbing with all night. That made us wonder if our food had been contaminated with some sort of Tuscan invisibility potion. (File under: Yes, Pete Wells has a point.) To be fair, the warm white wine table did get a selfie with Mazar ? but it?s unclear whether they?re friends IRL.

All this aside, a celebrity chef holding court every night on Henry Street should and can be a great thing for Brooklyn Heights. And while our first experience under this new regime totally bummed us out, we?re holding out hope that Bevacco will rise above these issues.

It?s times like these we wonder ? What Would Gordon Ramsay Say?

1) Fix The Problems, Find A Leader.

As Ramsay told the owners of ?Grasshopper Also?, ?This restaurant will not succeed unless you make the necessary staff changes.? In his monologue, Ramsay adds the the eatery had everything it needed to succeed except a ?leader.?

2) Get Out Of Denial. Ramsay tells Allan Love, the recalcitrant owner of Ruby Tates Loves Fish that the ?quicker you get out of denial, the quicker we can work together.? Remember folks, it takes team work to make the dream work.

3) Communication Is Key. Transparency, respect and honesty may not always be a joy ride but it?ll make for a more productive restaurant. At Seascape, the owner and chef didn?t speak to each other.

4) Overpriced And Underwhelming Is No Way To Run A Restaurant. At Rococo, Ramsay railed against its pretentious food and ?f*&^ing ridiculous prices?. After we dropped a double C-note for our experience at Bevacco this is particularly relevant.

5) Super-Serve The Locals. ?When running a restaurant in Spain, don?t piss off the locals,? Ramsay says in the episode featuring La Parra. After a disastrous catering event for a local charity, the restaurant had a hard time convincing area residents to dine there. They never recovered from that mistake. The Brooklyn Heights restaurants that do well in the area know this and all have strong list of regulars ? Noodle Pudding, Henry?s End, Jack the Horse, Armando?s, River Deli, Colonie and a few others are great examples. Put simply, showbiz friends, unless they live in the area, will not carry the business beyond relaunch.

Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood marches on military facility

A spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood said the marchers had set off from the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque in northern Cairo, where they have been manning a vigil to demand deposed President Mohammed Morsi's reinstatement.

At least 72 Morsi supporters were shot dead by security forces on Saturday near the vigil, deepening the turmoil convulsing the country since the army shunted Egypt's first freely elected president from power on July 3.

A Reuters reporter said the march numbered several thousand, chanting: "Our blood and souls we sacrifice for Morsi." The military intelligence building is several miles from the site of the vigil.

The army, saying it was aware of the planned march, issued a statement urging protesters "not to come close to military facilities in general, and the headquarters of military intelligence specifically."

Thousands of Brotherhood supporters are defying a threat by Egypt's army-backed authorities to clear them from the site of the vigil.

Saturday's killings at dawn, following a day of rival mass rallies, fuelled global anxiety that the Arab world's most populous nation - a bridge between the Middle East and North Africa - risked broader conflagration.

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, was due to meet on Monday with the army's General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who led the overthrow of Mr Morsi, and officials of the Freedom and Justice Party, the Brotherhood's political wing.

Obamacare contraception: Could religious exemption be headed to Supreme Court?

Sharp disagreement between US appeals courts suggests the issue of religious exemptions for the Obamacare contraception requirement could be on a fast track to the Supreme Court.

In a 2-to-1 decision, the panel of the Third US Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia ruled that although corporations have free speech rights under the Supreme Court?s Citizens United decision, they do not enjoy the protections of the free exercise of religion.

?We simply cannot understand how a for-profit, secular corporation ? apart from its owners ? can exercise religion,? Judge Robert Cowen wrote for the two-judge majority.

The case is one of 60 lawsuits across the country challenging the contraceptive portion of the employer health-care mandate on religious grounds.

Last month, the full Tenth US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in a case involving the Hobby Lobby chain of craft stores that for-profit, secular corporations can claim the protections of religious freedom.

That court upheld an injunction blocking the required provision of contraceptive methods that offended the company owners? religious beliefs.

The sharp disagreement between the appeals court in Philadelphia and the Tenth Circuit in Denver suggests that the dispute may now be on a fast track for review at the US Supreme Court.?

Friday?s decision comes in a case filed by the owners of a Pennsylvania furniture company, all members of the same family and all devout Mennonites.

The owners objected to being forced to pay for contraception methods that they consider abortifacients.

The mandate, which took effect in January, forced the owners to choose between violating their religious beliefs or facing the destruction of their business through fines of $95,000 a day.

The company, Conestoga Wood Specialties Corporation, employs 950 workers. It provides a health insurance plan for employees in line with mandated health insurance coverage, but the owners objected on religious grounds to inclusion of certain kinds of contraceptives that involve destruction of a fertilized egg.

State Farm to sue NV Energy over 2011 wildfire in Reno

RENO (AP) -- State Farm Insurance plans to seek action against NV Energy for claims stemming from a November 2011 wildfire in Reno sparked by arcing power lines.

The wind-driven fire destroyed 26 homes and damaged 17.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports State Farm has sent letters to customers notifying them that the company will file action against NV Energy through a long-standing industry practice known as subrogation.

It's a legal action that can be taken by insurance companies against a third party they believe to be responsible for damage sustained by customers.

State Farm declined to comment about specifics because it has yet to be filed.

A NV Energy spokesman says the company doesn't comment on pending lawsuits.

Twitter casts new light on blanket royal baby coverage

News presenter Natalie Morales of NBC Today knits baby booties in opposite St Mary's Hospital

NBC presenter Natalie Morales knits baby booties opposite St Mary's Hospital as the media waits for the royal birth. Photograph: Suzanne Plunkett/Reuters

Twitter added something quite new to the royal learning curve. We already knew many of the lessons on offer last week. That 14-and-a-half hours of waiting for nothing remotely visual to happen outside a hospital on Britain's hottest day seemed like a hardship posting for 90 or so TV crews and at least 150 photographers. That the hours of nothing to say have to be filled by saying something asinine. That expecting Sophie Raworth (two daughters, one son), Julie Etchingham (two sons) or Kate Silverton (one daughter) to simulate ecstasy over this miracle child flies in the face of experience or reality. That all newborn babies look much the same. Aahh! That recent mums have a residual bump. And that the Guardian website's special home page ? press Royalist to get the whole works and Republican to see it vanish in a trice ? was a demonstration of digital gymnastics scary enough to make David Cameron drool.

Yet it was the tweets that told the underlying story. The Mail and Telegraph are keen on leftwing conspiracies: no, not just in the Indy or Guardian, but amid the tentacles enfolding the BBC. All life, it seems, is warped to a hidden agenda. But Twitter, through the wastelands of waiting, told a parallel story. Were the reporters and columnists from papers and news organisations right, left or centre displaying genuine fascination with unfolding events, or were they just groaning sotto voce? Was the excitement that filled US news-channel screens fact or confected fiction? Frankly, my dear, did anyone give a damn ? except the millions of readers, viewers and unique visitors out there who, it was variously assumed, displayed rapt attention? Could this ? as the BBC put it ? really be "the people's pregnancy"?

Of course, in a way, there are moments of history here. Hail the future King George (86 when the next millennium dawns). Strike a few more peripheral royals off the civil list. Watch opinion polls squeeze the republican vote still further, at least for a while. But if I were sitting in Buckingham Palace pondering the future, I wouldn't be worrying much over any of these things: rather, uneasily, the perception that when push came to gush, the media was delivering a battle of bitten lips. Here were columnists for Tory papers making bad jokes about hard Labour. Here was a sweaty BBC presenter groaning that "nothing's going to happen". It was routine royal business as usual from London to LA.

And the question for journalists to ask themselves is a nagging one. Do we jump through all these hoops, fill all these hours, churn out of all these supplements, because our audience is enthralled ? or because we merely suppose they're enthralled?

Somehow 2.8% of the viewing population watching BBC News (not to mention 1.6% of the Sky News legions) through the longest day doesn't quite hit that spot. Somehow 50,000 extra copies of The Times as stowaway souvenirs doesn't do it either. Perhaps too many punters were on the phone to YouGov at the time, defining how interested they were in this amazing baby. Answer: not very, 29%; not at all, 24%; don't know, 2%.

Of course it all surged up later, when there were swaddling clothes there to see. Of course the blogosphere staged its predictable explosion. Of course two obviously cheery young marrieds had something pleasant to celebrate. And of course some millions of Brits and others round the globe wished to celebrate with them. A happy event. But this blanket of media cynicism and boredom that suffocates such simple feeling? An enthusiasm fuelled by audience figures alone? Portent because it's expected, not felt? Alas, that's nothing to feel happy about.

Pope scolds rich, demands social justice in visit to Brazil slum

By Philip Pullella and Anthony Boadle

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Thursday issued the first social manifesto of his young pontificate, telling slum dwellers in Brazil that the world's rich must do much more to wipe out vast inequalities between the haves and the have-nots.

The pope also urged Brazil's youth, who have taken part in recent protests showing discontent with the status quo, to keep alive their "sensitivity towards injustice" and be a catalyst in the fight against corruption.

The first Latin American pope, who has rallied the Church on behalf of the poor and who lives more austerely than his predecessors, called for a "culture of solidarity" to replace the "selfishness and individualism" prevailing in modern society.

"No one can remain insensitive to the inequalities that persist in the world," he told residents of Manguinhos, a sprawling shantytown, or favela, of ramshackle brick dwellings that until recently was overrun by violence and controlled by drug lords.

His speech, under rains that have persisted throughout most of his first trip abroad as pope, came halfway through a week-long visit around World Youth Day, a gathering of young Catholics that is expected to attract more than a million faithful to Rio de Janeiro and nearby sites.

Despite the downpours and unusually chilly weather, tens of thousands of rapturous Brazilians and foreign visitors have turned out to welcome the pope. The World Youth Day events are an effort by the Vatican to inspire Catholics at a time when rival denominations, secularism and sexual and financial scandals continue to lead some to abandon the Church.

Brazil, home to the world's biggest population of Catholics with over 120 million faithful, is an apt locale for the pope to remind the world of inequality. A recent decade of economic growth in the country raised incomes for many, but tens of millions of Brazilians still live in poverty or with little more than the basics to get by.

In Manguinhos, Francis, an Argentine known for frequent outings into the slums near Buenos Aires even as a cardinal, smiled and visibly enjoyed the chaotic close contact allowed with residents there. He called for more efforts to end poverty and said authorities must do more than just crack down on the drug trade to ensure opportunities for those at the bottom of the economic ladder.

"Everybody, according to his or her particular opportunities and responsibilities, should be able to make a personal contribution to putting an end to so many social injustices," he said in an address on a muddy, rain-drenched soccer field next to a river smelling of sewer water.

Making the speech after blessing the favela's small chapel and visiting one of its homes on a recently cleaned street, the pope challenged the rich and powerful to use their influence to enact lasting change.

"I would like to make an appeal to those in possession of greater resources, to public authorities and to all people of good will who are working for social justice: never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity!" he said.

Reflecting his humble personal style, Francis said he would like to have been able to stop in every Brazilian home "to ask for a glass of cold water, to take a cafezinho, but not a shot of cacha?a," a mention of Brazilian rum that drew laughter from the crowd.

Driving in an open popemobile, Francis was surrounded by a throng of residents, some barefoot, and leaned out to kiss a woman and shake extended hands as he entered the slum, where there was a heavy presence of police and military.

'PACIFICATION' OF POOR NOT ENOUGH

The pope praised Brazil?s efforts over the last decade to reduce poverty in Latin America's largest nation, which last month was rocked by massive protests against corruption, the misuse of public money and the high cost of living.

But he said more needed to be done to bridge the gap between rich and poor at the root of social injustice, in a reference to the police occupation of Rio's slums started last year to "pacify" drug-related violence.

"No amount of 'pacification' will be able to last, nor will harmony and happiness be attained in a society that ignores, pushes to the margins or excludes a part of itself," he said.

Manguinhos, home to about 35,000 poor people, was known locally as "Gaza Strip" for its frequent shootings. It is one of the slums that have been part of a community policing operation that has reduced violence in the shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro.

"In those days, I never knew when I entered the church if I would be alive when I got out," said Father Marcio Queiroz, pastor of the local chapel. "It was like a fruit market but instead of selling fruit on the tables on the street there was guns, crack and other drugs."

At one end of the sports field where Francis spoke hung a huge painting of Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador, who often denounced repression and poverty in his weekly homilies and was murdered by a right-wing death squad in 1980.

Francis has decided to unblock the beatification process for Romero, the penultimate step before Catholic sainthood.

From the slum, Francis traveled to Rio's modern cathedral, where he received a roaring welcome from tens of thousands of young people from his native country who were in Rio for the Catholic jamboree.

On Thursday evening he is to welcome participants in the World Youth Day from a stage on the crescent shaped Copacabana beach. More than one million people are expected for the event.

On Sunday, he presides at the close of World Youth Day in a pasture outside Rio before leaving for Rome that evening.

Have The SEO Blues? Try Some Expert Advice To Boost Your ...

The term ?search engine optimization? refers to deliberately crafting parts of your website to improve its search engine performance. There is an entire industry that revolves around search engine optimization. Some people might tell you that SEO is an arcane field beyond the reach of ordinary webmasters. Pay no attention to that.

Make sure you use the right keyword density when optimizing your website. To keep out of trouble, at least 80 percent of your page content should not be keywords.

Keywords that best identify your business should be prominent in your domain name. After all, you want people to find your website easily. Remember, not all people coming to your site will be from advertisements, some people will come from searching for products that are on your site.

To make your site more noticeable you should use a lot of keywords; even ones that are misspelled in the meta tag area. Sites that have effective meta tags will show up in more searches for a higher variety of keywords. For example, if you have a website about Maine Coon cats, then use ?Maine Coon? as well as ?Main Coon? and ?Mainecoon.?

Anchor Text

Internal links must use relevant anchor text for the best impact. Not using proper keywords in your anchor text will harm your ratings in search rankings. Good anchor text will really help improve your search engine rank.

When selecting a domain name, choose one that is easily remembered and has a name that has something to do with what you are selling. A memorable name is important, especially for people who find your content through social media sites.

Instead of writing AP styles for SEO, try writing SEO. This means repeating keywords as much as possible without breaking up the flow of the writing. One reason using keywords will improve your rankings on search engines is that search engine spiders work by locating and weighting keywords.

Search Engines

Blogging about your website, business, or personal life can really boost your search engine rankings. Blogs are a great format for search engine optimization, because they have a nice link structure and update regularly; two key points search engines look for. Search engines look very highly upon websites with a lot of backlinks.

Take the initiative to request that a non-profit or educational site link back to your site content. Any reputable site that links to your website will help you greatly when it comes to ranking with search engines. Ensure that the quality of your content is high, and you may attract reliable, professional organizations who want to feature a link to your site on their own. You must create unique content that is useful for these sites.

You want to make sure that your keyword is included in your domain name. This will draw visitors who are truly interested in your site?s content. There are many people who will be searching for specific products on the site. It is important to make it easy for them to find what they need.

After choosing which keywords are best for your site, get as many as you can in your web page?s title. The first impression of your site is generated by the title, so choose it with care. This way, your site will be clicked because it most fits the search results the user typed in.

A site map is an important part of your website if you want search engines to be able to create an index of your site pages. These maps make it easy to find any subpage on your site. Even if your site is small, a site map can have a big impact on its search engine rankings.

It is essential to regularly add new content and publish fresh articles. Set a weekly goal, and no matter the size remain with it. Search engines recognize websites that constantly update their content as being more informative and up-to-date than those who don?t. As a result, these sites are indexed more often. Higher page rankings are awarded to sites with frequent new content.

You can do this by creating a robots. txt file and putting it in the root of your directory. The contents of this file will direct the search engines to ignore certain parts of your site.

You rarely get image links with sites that are optimized for various search engines. Search engine bots can only parse the URL of an image link for search-relevant keywords.

Optimizing your webpage makes it more visible for your customers. Unfortunately, some online businesses still underestimate the importance of their search engine rankings.

You can give your SEO efforts a boost by using off-site linking, but make sure these links lead to quality content from a reputable site. This is best way to use linking. Relevant links to other websites are more valuable from a SEO perspective than the links that interlink your website. When choosing which websites to link to from your website, you should opt for websites that are willing to link to your website in return. This will further improve your rank.

Using a product feed will give your business a more visible presence and help draw more potential customers to your website. If you use the plural form or longer form of keywords, you will get more listings in the search results. Keyword stemming is a popular technique of some search engines. By choosing the keyword ?accountant?, alternate forms of the word, such as ?accounting? or ?accountants?, may not automatically be included in the search engine results. Using the longest version of any keyword result will return all the shorter results.
