T-Mobile and Verizon announce spectrum deal ... - Know Your Cell

T-Mobile announced Monday that it struck a spectrum deal with Verizon Wireless. The agreement between the two carriers involves the ?purchase and exchange? of Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum licenses in some 218 U.S. markets.

T-Mobile says that the FCC?s approval of the spectrum will help improve its position in 15 of the top 25 markets in the U.S. After receiving the green light, T-Mobile would then cover 60 million people, most notably in Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Detroit, Minneapolis, Seattle, Cleveland, Columbus, Milwaukee, Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Greensboro, Memphis, and Rochester.

Approval of the spectrum could also help boost T-Mobile?s 4G services, along with the carrier?s network modernization and next year's rollout of LTE services.

Bellevue, Wash. ? June 25, 2012 ??Today, T-Mobile USA, Inc. announced an agreement with Verizon Wireless for the purchase and exchange of certain Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum licenses in 218 markets across the U.S.? The transaction will improve T-Mobile?s spectrum position in 15 of the top 25 markets in the U.S. by providing an opportunity for T-Mobile both to acquire additional AWS spectrum and to realign its existing spectrum holdings.? Following regulatory approval, this spectrum can be promptly deployed to enhance the company?s 4G mobile broadband service, including the rollout of LTE service next year.?Some of the spectrum T-Mobile is acquiring in this transaction include licenses that Verizon is purchasing from?SpectrumCo, Cox and Leap, and the agreement is contingent on the closing of those transactions and is subject to regulatory approval by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Department of Justice.

T-Mobile will gain spectrum covering 60 million people ? notably in Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; Detroit; Minneapolis; Seattle; Cleveland; Columbus, Ohio; Milwaukee; Charlotte, N.C.; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Greensboro, N.C.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Rochester, N.Y. ? in exchange for spectrum covering 22 million people and certain cash consideration. The agreement also includes exchanges in a number of markets in which the companies will swap licenses to create more contiguous blocks of spectrum and re-align spectrum in adjacent markets. These intra-market swaps will enhance T?Mobile?s network performance and data throughput in key locations. This agreement is in addition to T-Mobile?s previously announced $4 billion 4G network evolution plan, which includes modernization of 37,000 cell sites, launching 4G HSPA+ services in the 1900 MHz band and deployment of LTE in 2013.

China puts its first woman astronaut into orbit

JIUQUAN, China (Reuters) - China put its first woman into orbit on Saturday, one of three astronauts to attempt a critical space docking in the latest challenge for the country's ambitious space programme.

A Long March rocket blasted off in the early evening from the remote Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the northwestern Gobi Desert, carrying with it the Shenzhou 9 spacecraft and the three astronauts, including 33-year-old female fighter pilot Liu Yang.

This is China's fourth manned space mission since 2003 when astronaut Yang Liwei became the country's first person in orbit, and comes as the United States has curtailed manned launches over budget concerns and changing priorities.

The launch was carried live on state television, and until moments before blast-off, a camera showed the three astronauts in the cabin occasionally waving. A red placard with the Chinese symbol for good fortune hung behind them.

Within days, the astronauts will try to dock with the orbiting Tiangong (Heavenly Palace) 1 module launched last September, part of a 13-day mission crucial to China's ambition to put a space station in orbit around 2020.

"I believe that we can achieve this goal, because we already have the basic technological capability," Zhou Jianping, the chief designer of China's manned space engineering project, told reporters before the launch.

A successful manned docking mission for China would be the latest show of the country's growing capabilities in space, to match its expanding military and diplomatic clout.

Still, Beijing is playing catch up with the United States and Russia, which, along with other countries, jointly operate the International Space Station some 240 miles above Earth.

Rendezvous and docking techniques such as those which China is only testing now were mastered by the United States and the former Soviet Union decades ago, and the 10.5 meter-long Tiangong 1 is a trial module, not a full-fledged space station.

Linking with the unmanned module will be an important hurdle in China's efforts to acquire the technological and logistical skills needed to run a full space lab that can house astronauts for long stretches.

Fears of a space arms race with the United States and other powers mounted after China blew up one of its own weather satellites with a ground-based missile in January 2007, though China has insisted its programme is peaceful.

"China's manned space programme has never been for military purposes. It is mainly to research how mankind can go into space, use space peacefully," He Yu, the general commander of China's manned spacecraft project, said before the launch.

The United States will not test a new rocket to take people into space until 2017, and Russia has said manned missions are no longer a priority.

But NASA has begun investing in U.S. firms to provide commercial spaceflight services and is spending about $3 billion a year on a new rocket and capsule to send astronauts to the moon, asteroids and eventually to Mars.

Chinese scientists have talked of the possibility of sending a man to the moon after 2020, the final step in a three-stage moon plan, which includes the deployment of a moon rover in 2013 and the retrieval of lunar soil and stone samples around 2017.

China's space programme has come a long way since late leader Mao Zedong, founder of Communist China in 1949, lamented that the country could not even launch a potato into space.

Riverton High School students Jordan Kearns and Chandler Adkins captured fourth place in the National Ford/AAA Auto Skills Competition in Dearborn, Mich., this week.

The competition pitted two-person teams from all 50 states against one another as they rushed to solve "real world" automotive repair challenges.

Kearns and Adkins and their instructor Jay Hales won the Utah competition earlier this year and earned the right to compete in the national contest held at the Ford world headquarters.

At the start of the competition, the student teams raced to their vehicles to review a work order that challenged them to diagnose and repair a number of purposefully placed "bugs," ranging from digital to mechanical and electrical.

The same bugs were placed on each team?s vehicle.

Once the repairs were completed, it was a race to shut the hood, start the engine and steer the vehicle across the finish line to where judges waited to scrutinize their efforts. The time and thoroughness of the repairs combined with the results of a written examination determined the winners.

Nearly $12 million in scholarships were awarded in the state and national competitions this year.

Red Sox's collapse still stings Epstein

CHICAGO (AP) - Theo Epstein still can't erase the Boston Red Sox's collapse last season from his mind.

Now the Chicago Cubs' president of baseball operations, he says he remembers "stuff from 2003." And what happened late last season, when he was Boston's general manager, was the "toughest of all of them."

"At the same time, you move on," he added. "You learn from it, try to get better."

The subject came up with the Red Sox visiting Wrigley Field for the first time since 2005. Epstein spoke before Friday's game.

The Red Sox were in line for a playoff spot but missed out for the second straight year after going 7-20 in September, one of the worst months in club history. The collapse led to Boston declining manager Terry Francona's option and Epstein jumping to Chicago, a bitter end to one of the club's most successful decades.

The Red Sox won championships in 2004 and 2007 with Epstein as GM after going 86 years without one, and the Cubs are hoping he can help bring them their first since 1908.

Clearly, they have a long way to go. They entered Friday's game with a major league-worst 21-42 record.

"We've been here six months," Epstein said. "There's been progress in a lot of different areas. Some of it is behind the scenes. We've put together a new scouting plan, development philosophy, getting them on the same page, commit to a vision for the future as far as young players we're trying to identify and develop. A lot of work behind the scenes."

Does Microsoft have a tablet up its sleeve?

The big question for the past day on the Microsoft beat: What in the heck is the major, can?t-miss news that the company is promising to deliver on Monday?

Microsoft isn?t saying a word, despite endless attempts at arm-twisting from people like me. But overnight, a plausible answer emerged. The Wrap?quotes an unnamed source?saying that Microsoft will be unveiling its own tablet, based on the upcoming Windows 8 operating system, to take on the iPad. AllThingsD?reports that it?s hearing the same thing.

Mary Jo Foley?connects those reports to Microsoft?s Barnes & Noble partnership, and wonders if the real target might be Amazon?s Kindle Fire.

Whatever the case, it would be a huge break with tradition for the company.

Dating back to the very early days of the PC industry, Bill Gates and Paul Allen chose to stay out of the hardware business and instead supply the operating system and key applications for computers. It was the key strategic decision that led to Windows dominating the market for PC operating systems, in part because hardware companies knew that their OS vendor was a partner, not a competitor.

However, it wouldn?t be completely unprecedented for the company. Microsoft made an exception in the video-game business ? deciding that coming out with its own console, the Xbox, was the only way to effectively compete with the likes of Sony and Nintendo. And the strategy has largely worked.

With the rise of the iPad taking the steam out of sales of low-end Windows-based computers, it?s quite possible that Microsoft has decided to make a similar exception in the tablet market, assuming these latest reports are true.

Whether a Microsoft-branded tablet would be an?effective?competitor to the iPad or Kindle Fire is another question entirely, depending on a whole range of factors, from the quality of the experience to the price.

In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government of?cial, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn?t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that, if successful, will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Previous (unconfirmed) reports indicated that Damon?s character is an ex-convict, which has prompted speculation about what the aforementioned body suit could be. One of the popular theories (among others) pegs the mechanical appendage as a life-supporting item, thus making?Max (by definition) a cyborg; that could set the stage for Blomkmap?s film to explore the increasingly prevalent role technology plays in our everyday lives (similar to the impending RoboCop remake). Bear in mind, though, that guess could also be WAY off base.

Moving past that ? Elysium appears to offer a mix of gruesome violence, thrills, and sci-fi allegory along the lines of District 9. The logline alludes to a storyline that addresses timely issues of social upheaval and class warfare, which are currently all the rage in both movies (The Hunger Games, Dark Knight Rises) and on television (Legend of Korra). It also suggests a place for the ?antagonist? being portrayed by Wagner Moura, who?s previously been described as a divisive, but charismatic figure involved with human trafficking (possibly, into Elysium).

Supporting roles in Elysium will be filled out by people like District 9 star Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga (Predators), Diego Luna (Y Tu Mam? Tambi?n), William Fichtner (Prison Break), Carly Pope (Outlaw), Michael Shanks (Stargate SG-1) and Talisa Soto (Mortal Kombat). The diversity of that roster ? in combination with the Elysium synopsis, indicates that issues of xenophobia and contemporary racism should also be touched on (as they were in D9).

Overall, there appears to be reason enough for fans of cerebral sci-fi to mark their calendars for March 1st, 2013, which is when Elysium begins its theatrical release in the U.S. Naturally, we?ll continue to keep you up-to-date on the project?s status in the meantime.

'Band of Brothers' honored on D-Day anniversary

SAINTE-MARIE-DU-MONT, France (AP) ? A statue in the likeness of a Pennsylvania native whose quiet leadership was chronicled in the World War II book and television miniseries "Band of Brothers" is being unveiled near the beaches where the D-Day invasion of France began in 1944.

The 12-foot (3.6-meter) tall bronze statue in the Normandy village of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont shows Maj. Dick Winters with his weapon at the ready, evoking the massive Allied operation that paved the way for the end of the war.

The unveiling is one of many ceremonies Wednesday commemorating the 68th anniversary of the invasion.

Winters ? a native of Ephrata, Pennsylvania who died last year aged 92 ? only accepted serving as the statue's likeness after monument planners agreed to dedicate it to the memory of all junior U.S. military officers who served that day.
